Curated Works
The Curated Works collection brings together significant pieces by two of the North East’s most respected twentieth-century artists — Tom McGuinness and Norman Cornish.
Both artists are celebrated for their powerful visual documentation of working-class life in County Durham and the wider industrial North. Through painting and drawing, they captured the rhythm, hardship, community and dignity of mining culture with honesty and profound humanity.
Tom McGuinness, a miner before becoming a professional artist, depicted the physical intensity of pit life and the stark drama of industrial landscapes with expressive brushwork and emotional depth. His work is both historical record and personal testimony.
Norman Cornish, often described as one of Britain’s most important mining artists, chronicled daily life in Spennymoor and surrounding communities for decades. His paintings extend beyond the pit to portray streets, interiors, churches and gatherings — revealing the social fabric that surrounded industrial labour.
Together, these curated works honour a shared legacy: art rooted in lived experience. They stand not only as important cultural artefacts, but as enduring reflections of identity, resilience and place.
Through this collection, No. Three Fine Art Gallery offers collectors and visitors the opportunity to engage with pieces that hold deep regional significance while maintaining national importance within British art history.
